Virage — Privacy Policy (English)

Virage is an audio fiction app published by Guillaume Bernos, available on iPhone and iPad (App Store) and on Android (Google Play). This policy covers both; the few differences between the platforms are marked as such.
In short
Virage collects no personal data. No account, no sign-up, no advertising, no trackers, no analytics. The app downloads volumes from our distribution server without ever telling us who you are: it sends no identifier, and we have no way to tie a download to a person. The free volume installs with the app and plays in airplane mode.
What we do not collect
We do not collect, transmit or store on any server: your name or email address, your location, your contacts, photos or files, your advertising or device identifiers, or any usage, crash or performance statistics. The app contains no advertising SDK, no analytics library and no third-party tracking code.
Your progress
So that you can pick a story up where you left it, the app stores your position in each volume and the choices behind it; the clues you have found and the stamps you have earned, with their dates; the endings you have reached; and your reading preferences (Reading or Detective mode, ambience, narration speed).
This information is never sent to us and we cannot access it. It passes through no server of ours, and we have no way to read it. It stays on your device, with two exceptions — both in your hands, and entrusted not to us but to Apple or Google, under your own account:
iCloud sync (iOS and iPadOS). If you are signed into iCloud, the app mirrors your progress into your private iCloud database, so that your place and your stamps follow you to your other Apple devices. That data is stored under your Apple Account, in a space we have no access to — we cannot read it, export it, or connect it to you. It is governed by Apple's privacy policy. If you are signed out of iCloud, or you switch Virage off in Settings → your name → iCloud, the app stores everything locally and behaves identically.
Android Backup. If you have Google's automatic backup enabled, Android may include this data in your backup, as it does for other apps. That backup is performed by Google under your Google account and is governed by Google's privacy policy; we have no access to it. You can turn it off in your Android settings.
In both cases this is your progress, in your personal storage. Nothing is pooled, nothing is analysed, nothing comes back to us.
Permissions
Virage requests only what background audio playback needs: on Android, a media-playback foreground service and its notification; on iOS and iPadOS, the audio background mode, which involves no permission prompt at all.
The app shows no permission prompts of any kind. It does not access the microphone, your location, your contacts, the camera or your photos, and it does not ask for tracking permission (App Tracking Transparency).
Virage never requests microphone access — it records nothing. Choices are made by tapping, never by speaking.
Artificial intelligence
The character voices are produced in the studio, before release, using a speech-synthesis tool, from scripts we write ourselves. The resulting files are mastered and then either shipped with the app or downloaded from our distribution server. The app itself uses no AI service: it plays fixed recordings, generates nothing while you listen, and never sends anything about you to a third-party service.
Network
The app contains no third-party SDK — no advertising, no analytics, no crash reporting. It opens exactly three kinds of connection.
Our distribution server. Volumes no longer install with the app: they are downloaded from cdn.virageapp.com, which is what lets a new story be published without an app update. The app asks it for the list of available volumes at launch, then for a volume's files when you download it.
Those requests carry no identifier: no account, no device identifier, no advertising identifier, nothing that distinguishes your copy of the app from anyone else's. Like any web server, our host (Cloudflare) processes your IP address for as long as it takes to deliver the file you asked for. We do not read those technical logs, we derive no statistics from them, and there is no means on our side of tying a download to a person, or two downloads to each other.

The App Store and Google Play, for buying and restoring volumes. Those exchanges happen between your device and Apple or Google; all we ever see is that a volume is owned, never by whom.
Once a volume is downloaded it plays entirely offline — in airplane mode, in a tunnel, abroad. The free volume installs with the app and never needs the network at all.
Children
Virage is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone, at any age. The stories are fiction — detective, romance — written for teenage and adult listeners.
Deleting your data
Since we hold nothing, there is no request to send us: deletion happens entirely from your device.
- iOS and iPadOS — uninstalling the app erases its local progress. To erase the iCloud copy as well: Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Backups and app data → Virage → Delete data.
- Android — uninstall the app, or Settings → Apps → Virage → Storage → Clear data.
